Position Title: Construction Trainer

Reports to: Executive Director

Full Time Employee

Compensation: $30-$35/hour

This is a full-time hourly position with benefits including: individual health insurance, 10 paid holidays, sick and vacation time. Work hours are generally 8:30 am-5:00 pm Monday through Friday.  Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required.

POSITION PURPOSE

  • To be a systems thinker, well-organized, and excel at explaining, teaching, and demonstrating complex building concepts to a variety of audiences.  

  • To lead classrooms, construction crews, teams, or other groups.

  • To identify and secure small remodeling contracts, and schedule training activities. 

  • To work directly with community partners and training partners. 

  • To ensure participants are prepared for and pass all Multi-Craft Core construction modules.

  • To teach and supervise participants in the performance of tasks related to rehabilitation and/or construction of affordable housing and other projects.

  • To provide support and guidance and encourage the development of academic, life management, and personal growth skills.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Supervisory experience in construction related activities with current State of Minnesota Qualified Builder/Contractor license preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional level construction experience working with all elements of housing construction required.

  • Knowledge of methods and skills in the use of carpentry equipment, materials, and tools, and common hazards and necessary safety precautions required.

  • Skilled at reading and interpreting instructions, diagrams, sketches and blueprints.

  • Proven ability to present and provide instructions in areas related to residential remodeling and new construction.

  • Ability to relate to, lead, and instruct populations of adults ages 18 and up who experience barriers to accessing education and employment.

  • Passion for working with individuals of diverse ages, gender identification, cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and educational backgrounds.

  • Effective communicator;  both verbal and written communication. 

  • written and computer skills to include Microsoft Office, Internet, and email.

  • OSHA, CPR/First Aid/AED, and Lead Safe Renovator certifications are desired.

  • Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check.

  • Ability to perform all required tasks associated with manual labor to include heavy lifting, stooping, bending, and climbing ladders.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Construction Training

  1. Learn and teach Green New Deal Housing’s existing green construction curriculum and deliver training to a variety of audiences, including opportunity youth, experienced tradespeople, and community members.

  2. Teach the Multi-Craft Core (MC3) certification curriculum to participants using prescribed materials.

  3. Administer module tests, track, and report participant results, provide remedial help where needed.

  4. Ensure tracking of participant demographics and accurate reporting for funders.

  5. Teach basic construction skills to include: demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, and finish carpentry.

  6. Ensure worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper construction techniques and all trained safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

  7. Support academic, leadership, and employment goals of the program by incorporating all into building site activities whenever possible.

  8. Initiate and schedule OSHA, Lead Safe Renovator, and CPR/First Aid/AED training for all participants.

  9. Keep track of tools and equipment used on the job on a daily basis.

  10. Attend all staff and partner meetings and coordinate participant plans.

  11. Pursue both ongoing and intermittent opportunities to offer GNDH training to educational and workforce development organizations and programs.

  12. Develop and maintain relationships with area organizations serving individuals in construction-related career development.

  13. Convene the workforce development committee and/or advisors as required to vet program direction, effectiveness, and opportunities.

  14. Support the development of formal agreements with partnering organizations to deliver GNDH training to their enrolled participants and/or students.

  15. Support general program outreach to recruit participants and program partnerships.

 

Construction Projects

  1. Competitively bid small residential remodeling projects.

  2. Ensure that all contracts have been presented, thoroughly discussed, and signed by all parties.

  3. Work with GNDH Executive Director on obtaining Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) presented, discussed, and signed by building partners and other civic organizations prior to the start of all projects.

  4. Remedy any potential safety hazards identified in MOU prior to start of work (ex. lead paint).

  5. Work with the Executive Director to ensure that grant funded projects meet all grant requirements.

  6. Attend periodic build partner meetings to identify challenges and keep lines of communication open.

  7. Develop detailed construction plan and schedule, material needs, and other information as required by funders and MN law.

  8. Set worksite behavioral standards and model appropriate behavior and resolving conflicts at the jobsite.

 

Administrative

 

  1. Participate as a part of a collaborative team for program planning.

  2. Obtain all necessary training.

  3. Keep construction certification reports up-to-date, provide required certifications statistics to the Executive Director on a monthly basis, and apply for participant certificates upon completion of the MC3 curriculum.

  4. Complete daily activity log and construction report.

  5. Maintain inventory of all tools and equipment used on the job daily.

  6. Ensure all vehicles receive scheduled maintenance.

  7. Obtain all necessary continuing education hours to keep MN Qualified Builder status up to date.

  8. Attend additional meetings and training as required.

  9. All other duties as assigned.
